The Lady is a Champ
Friday, February 10th, 2006
Buffalo lawyer Denise O'Donnell's chances to become the state's first female attorney general took a giant leap forward when Eliot Spitzer, the Democratic Party's all-but-inevitable candidate for governor, picked Sen. David Paterson as his running mate. Spitzer and Paterson, who both hail from Manhattan, are feeling party pressure to balance their statewide appeal by including a woman from upstate on the ticket.
Not only is that smart politics, but O'Donnell, a former U.S. attorney for the Western District of New York, has advantages that go beyond her zip code and gender. In a year when voters are demanding reform, she's the only candidate who has successfully prosecuted crooked officials: O'Donnell convicted a sheriff in Niagara County and several of his deputies for stealing $200,000, and nailed seven Buffalo cops who were ripping off drug dealers.
Albany could use more of that take-no-prisoners approach to corruption.
